Fast and versatile young sportsmen and women are reaching their goals in their chosen sport. The popularity of futsal has grown in recent years among students at St Martin’s School, in Brentwood, with football players seeking a faster version of the game.
As a result, both the boys’ and girls’ teams in Year 7 were crowned mid Essex champions after going through to the final of the Mid Essex Futsal Tournament. The school has competed in both the Brentwood district and mid Essex area.
Lynne Swan, head of PE, said: “Girls’ football, in particular, has really grown over the years and futsal is a fantastic opportunity for a faster, more skilful version of the game. We have students who are extremely dedicated to football and to their training.
“We also have talented players who are very versatile with the positions that they can play. We are extremely proud of our players.
“This is a fantastic achievement.”
The Year 7 boys showed a combination of ‘assertive attack and dominant defence’ to win 1-0 in each of their tournament games, while the girls demonstrated ‘outstanding skill’ en route to their title win.
The school has futsal teams in each year group.
