VANCOUVER, Wash. — Vancouver Public Schools officially has a futsal court.
The new court was inaugurated Monday at Hough Elementary School.
Futsal is similar to soccer but played on a hard court with a smaller and heavier ball.
The initiative came together through the nonprofit Operation Pitch Invasion, with additional partners.
Operation Pitch Invasion said it is dedicated to enabling kids of all backgrounds and economic situations to get involved in sports.
Members of the Timbers and the Thorn’s family were on hand to help celebrate at the ribbon cutting.
“For us, the community is everything. We’re not anything without the community. We’re not anything without the people around us. That’s what’s so important about soccer as a whole, is it’s a club and community sport. And for us to be out here and see this and help give to the community in this respect, is for me the most important thing we can do,” said Shannon Murray, head coach of Portland Timbers2.
The Timbers and Thorns are partnering with Operation Pitch Invasion to build this court and similar facilities all over the Portland-metro area.
OPI aims to build 10 courts like the one at Hough across Clark County.
