A relaunched futsal competition in Yellowknife is now accepting registrations for its youth and adult programs.
Formerly known as NWT Futsal, the Yellowknife Futsal League will kick off its inaugural season on January 4, territorial governing body NWT Soccer said in a Monday email.
“This refreshed league focuses on serving the Yellowknife community with divisions for youth (U8–U16) and adults (16-plus),” NWT Soccer stated.
“Games will take place on Saturdays and Mondays, providing plenty of opportunities for players to enjoy the fast-paced and exciting game of futsal.
“This dynamic indoor soccer is growing rapidly in popularity across the North, emphasizing skill development, teamwork, and quick decision-making.”
Futsal has been an Arctic Winter Games sport since 2016, when it was introduced at that year’s event in Greenland. Ordinarily played on gymnasium floors, it involves a smaller, heavier and less bouncy ball than a regular soccer ball and has multiple rule changes from the kind of indoor soccer played at the city’s fieldhouse.
NWT Soccer said the Yellowknife league would offer “a great opportunity for players to prepare for future competitions or simply stay active and engaged during the winter months.”
Players of all levels are welcome. Learn more on the league’s website.
