The Vietnamese team met Thailand in the final match of the 2024 Southeast Asian Women’s Futsal Tournament held in the Philippines on the evening of 21/11. After 50 dramatic minutes, the Vietnamese female players became the first champions of the tournament.
When the two teams met in the group stage match the day before, the Vietnamese team lost 2-1. However, in the rematch for the championship, the situation was completely different.
Coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang’s players played on par with their opponents. Thailand dominated the first half, then the Vietnamese team gradually caught up and had many counterattacks.
The same situation happened in the second half. Both teams created many opportunities but failed to score, forcing the match to go into extra time.
The turning point of the match happened when there was about 1 minute left in the first extra time. From a side kick by Nguyen Phuong Anh, the ball hit a Thai player’s foot and changed direction into the goal.
Vietnam equalized from an own goal. However, Phuong Anh immediately restored the lead with a decisive kick. Thailand tried their best to attack in the last 3 minutes of the match but could not score. Vietnam won 2-1 and won the Southeast Asian championship.
This is the first international championship in 2024 for Vietnamese football.
